Volunteer in Your Zone

The nine (9) Zones that cover Ontario are enormous, both in size and in member numbers! And since MROO is run strictly by volunteers, we are always looking for individuals to join our team! Please check out our Zone Map here if you are not sure what zone you reside in.

Must be a MROO Life member, an OMERS Pensioner, and reside in that zone.

Each of our nine (9) zones has a Zone Director, who is, by virtue of their elected position, also a board member. Zone Directors oversee and monitor the activities of the organization, approve budgets, attend board meetings, set policies, participate in Retirement Planning Seminars in their zone, and much more. Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as on-line apps such as Zoom is important.

This position can require up to ten hours of work per week and Zone Directors receive a small honorarium for those tasks. Some limited travel (for which they are compensated) is also required including travel to the four annual Board Meetings. The Zone Director is also responsible for hosting the annual Spring Zone Meeting and other activities that take place in each zone.

Zone Directors are elected, or appointed if there if there are no nominees, for a three-year term, with a maximum of three terms. These elections take place at the Annual Zone Meetings and elections are staggered so only three (3) zones have elections in any single year.

Must be a MROO Life member, and an OMERS Pensioner and reside in that zone.

Alternate Directors are appointed by the Zone Director, who also coordinates all their activities. Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as on-line apps such as Zoom is important.

However, Alternate Directors also participate in more significant ways, including attending the Annual Meeting of Members every June, usually in Toronto.

Alternate Directors assist in the planning of the Annual Zone Meetings, everything from location selection, building a meeting theme, menu development, agenda preparation, and even deciding on who the guest speaker might be.

Alternate Directors can also host small coffee shop chats with new and existing members, use their old work contacts to help introduce MROO to soon to be OMERS retirees, participate in Retirement Planning Seminars in your zone, and even make presentations at your previous employer or their local union if they were former union members.

Must be a MROO Life Member and an OMERS Pensioner

Ambassadors are unelected individuals who volunteer to provide assistance to the Director. There is no binding obligation as there is for those in elected positions. An Ambassador is appointed by their Director and works with their Director, Alternate Director and other Ambassadors to help make current and future OMERS pensioners aware of MROO and to help build MROO membership. Ambassadors are appointed at the discretion of the Director based on the needs of that Zone. An Ambassador may be asked to make phone calls to greet new MROO members in their zone or to reach out to existing members for tasks such as contact updating.

In addition, Ambassadors help their Directors organize activities within the zone. Including the Spring Zone Meeting, occasional member “coffee shops,” and any other activities that a Director, or Alternate Director, has put together within the zone.

Ambassadors, at the request of their Director, may be asked to volunteer to participate at a MROO Retirement Planning Seminar by sitting on a panel to share their retirement experiences with those that are “soon to be” retirees.

The Executive of the Municipal Retirees Organization Ontario is made up of:

      i.        President

    ii.        Vice-President

   iii.        Treasurer

   iv.        Secretary

    v.        And potentially the Past-President

Executive Officers are appointed by the Board of Directors. Each Executive, if they are not Directors, also becomes a member of the MROO Board of Directors. Elections are staggered so only two positions can be up for election at any one time. A member can serve a maximum of two consecutive terms of three years each.
