Growing the Mini Forest Movement in Canada

About this Webinar

Jenn McCallum and Tianna Mighty from Green Communities Canada will discuss their work in planting mini forests.

This webinar will cover the following:

  • Green Communities Canada and their work with the Network of Nature

  • Planting Mini Forests, also known as Tiny Forests or Miyawaki Forests

  • An overview of the Miyawaki method and its ecological restoration principles

  • The key components of the method:1) robust soil amendments2) dense tree and shrub planting of locally native, climax species.

  • The earliest efforts at mini forests in Canada

  • The National Mini Forest Pilot, and the 45 Miyawaki forests between Vancouver Island and St. John, NB.

  • Funding for mini forests through the Living Cities Canada Fund

About the Speakers: Jenn McCallum and Tianna Mighty

Jenn McCallum (she/her, elle) is the Green Infrastructure Manager at Green Communities Canada (GCC), where she oversees planting projects across Canada, including 45 mini forests between 2023-2025. She has previously led environmental programming with Parks Canada, at the Science North science centre in Sudbury, ON, at two conservation authorities, and with GCC member organization GreenUP. Jenn is grateful to live on the Treaty 20 homelands of the Michi Saagiig and Chippewa Nations in Nogojiwanong (Peterborough, ON), where she enjoys cycling the trails and roadways, and canoeing the waterways.  

Tianna Mighty (she/her) is the Green Infrastructure Program Coordinator with Green Communities Canada, where she oversees the delivery of community-led green infrastructure across the country, supported by the Living Cities Canada Fund.  Tianna also leads the coordination of Green Communities Canada’s online training programs, including the Mini Forest Training and Rain Garden Master Class. Through these initiatives, she supports community leaders and municipal practitioners in building the knowledge and capacity needed to implement and sustain impactful green infrastructure projects. Tianna is grateful to live and work in Treaty 1 Territory (Winnipeg, MB), the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and the homeland of the Métis Nation.
