Getting Started

You can become a member for if you meet the criteria below for either Life Associate, or Affiliate Membership. 

After you become a member, you may attend Zone Meetings and take advantage of the various programs, information and educational offerings available to members 

Once you have completed your membership application form, your membership type will automatically be selected based upon your responses.

A Life Member is a retired employee of a municipal government, public utility, board of education, library board, emergency service (fire, police or paramedic), Child and Family Services (CAS), conservation authority, or any other board, commission or employer specified in the OMERS Act. They must be in receipt of a pension which is, in whole or in part, paid by OMERS. 

A Life Member is eligible to run for and hold office in the Corporation. They may attend the Annual Meeting of Members and when elections are held at Annual Zone Meetings, cast a vote for a Director in the Zone in which they reside 

A Life Member may also view financial statements, documents and records of the Corporation as provided in the Act. 

Associate Memberare employees of an OMERS employer and enrolled in the pension plan but, unlike a Life member, are not yet in receipt of an OMERS pension

An Associate Member shall have the same rights or privileges of a Life Member except that an Associate Member is not entitled to vote or hold office.

An Associate Member becomes a Life Member immediately upon retirement and must be in receipt of a pension which is, in whole or in part, paid by OMERS. There is no new or additional membership fee payable to become a Life member, but you must first notify us upon your retirement. 

Affiliate Members are active or retired employees from “other public sector employers,” that are not part of the OMERS pension plan, or are OMERS Retirees that have opted to receive the commuted value of their OMERS pension

“Other public sector employers” means a government organization that is primarily funded by government in areas of service such as but not limited to health care, education (including post-secondary), public utilities and electricity, childcare, and care of senior citizens.

An Affiliate Member may attend their Annual Zone meeting, take advantage of other programs, educational opportunities, and service offerings but cannot vote or hold office.
