MROO's annual Scholarship Program awards a number of $3,000 scholarships to students at Canadian universities, community colleges or similar post-secondary institutions entering the second year of study of their first degree, with a full course load (full-time student).

Scholarship candidates are graded on key factors such as their demonstrated experience in leadership positions, evidence of their volunteer work in their community, their ability to explain their vision of their future after their post-secondary studies, and how their studies will prepare them to lead and assist others in the future.

Don MacLeod Memorial Award for Leadership

Annually, the Scholarship Committee awards the prestigious $5,000 Don MacLeod Memorial Award for Leadership. The recipient will be judged the worthiest leader in the past, and in the future.

The Jack and Francine Delcourt Scholarship

In 2025, MROO announced a new scholarship - the Jack and Francine Delcourt Scholarship. The Scholarship recognizes Jack Delcourt (Retired Chief of Police, Barrie) who was instrumental in launching the MROO Scholarship Program in 2006, and his wife Francine Delcourt, for her long-time service as a member and Chair of the Scholarship Committee, as well as Alternate Director and Zone 9 Director for many years.

MROO would like to thank the Delcourts for their great contributions over the years and recognize the tremendous impact they had on the growth and success of the MROO Scholarship program. The new scholarship valued at $4,000 will be selected and awarded annually by the Scholarship Committee.

The first Jack and Francine Delcourt Scholarship will be awarded in 2025.

MROO Targeted Scholarship Program

After many years and hundreds of thousands of dollars in awards, the MROO Scholarship Program added a new wrinkle in 2023, the “targeted scholarship.” In the past, all MROO scholarships were awarded to the relatives of MROO members entering the second year of their first degree/diploma at a recognized university or college. This program has not been altered and the MROO Scholarship Committee continues to make these awards every fall.

The new Targeted Scholarships are for graduate students and, though funded by MROO, are awarded by our university partners using agreed upon terms. These new scholarships focus on supporting graduate students in Ontario who are doing research or pursuing a career that will positively impact the lives of older adults. The first partner school was Carleton University in Ottawa in 2023. In 2024 MROO signed an agreement with Thunder Bay's Lakehead University to become their 2nd partner school in the program. Learn more about the MROO Targeted Scholarship program here.
